Cor Jesu Academy Gym and Commons Addition

When Cor Jesu Academy acquired an adjacent parcel of land, exciting new opportunities arose for enhancing the mission of educating young women. To identify and prioritize these opportunities, the Academy engaged our firm to update the 2008 master plan.

The revised Master Plan proposes three phases of improvements to separate athletics from performing arts and provide a larger, more prominent place of worship. The two principal elements of the Master Plan are a new Gymnasium/Commons, and a Chapel Addition. The gymnasium addition is sited to take advantage of steeply sloping topography; the Chapel is oriented to provide a new iconic campus front door. The first phase of work included site improvements to increase parking capacity and improve student safety and site circulation.

The main level contains the two-story Student Commons serving both the gymnasium and existing dining hall. Floor-to-ceiling glass showcases activity in the gymnasium, and concessions serves event spectators. Also included on this level are a divisible multipurpose room, office suite and storage. Corridors at the upper level overlook the gymnasium below and lead to four new innovative classrooms.

Project Size: 37,382 SF

Location: St. Louis, MO

The new three-story Gymnasium/Student Commons structure was built into a hillside that sits one level below the existing dining hall. Ground-level facilities include a performance gymnasium with 2 cross courts, a fitness area, training suite, storage, and locker rooms for teams, officials and PE/athletics.
