Jackson-Madison County Pope School

When it became necessary to replace the existing 1940s Pope Elementary school building, we partnered with the Jackson-Madison County School System to select a site and master planning process for defining a new greenfield location suitable for a Pre-K to 8th grade campus, as well as a future high school.

The new Pre-K to 8th-grade building spans 142,700 SF and is thoughtfully designed to serve the existing Pope school community while offering essential Next Gen learning spaces. It prioritizes increased natural lighting, scenic views, and room for expansion into the middle school years. The ground level accommodates Pre-K to 5th grade, while grades 6-8 are situated on the second floor, promoting a sense of growth and providing suitable space for middle schoolers transitioning into young adults.

Project Size: 142,702 SF

Project Location: Jackson, TN

Services: Architecture

This project boasts a collaborative effort of industry leaders, community, and Jackson Madison County School System staff. With a focus on seamless integration between interior and exterior spaces, Pope Elementary invites students to explore their surroundings, while also providing them with district-level safety. Incorporating technological advancements and adaptability, this future-focused school fosters an ideal environment for education, collaboration, and growth.

The design encourages indoor/outdoor learning environments, with covered outdoor spaces directly accessible from the Media Center, Art rooms, Cafeteria, and even as an extension of the stage from the gymnasium.

Additionally, in support of the community's well-being, the Pre-K and Kindergarten wing is engineered to serve as a Tornado shelter. This feature ensures the safety of the youngest students during storms and provides the community with easily accessible post-hours shelter.

"We appreciate the opportunity for our team to be a part of continuing the legacy of Pope with the addition of this first-class facility. Not only will this project give students and faculty the adequate space and updates they need, but it will also have a positive impact on the local community for years to come,"said Dr. Ricky Catlett, Deputy Superintendent
