Saint Louis University High School James Guth Costigan Innovation Lab

The renovation of the Saint Louis University High School James Guth Costigan Innovation Lab transformed the lower level of an older academic building into a vibrant hub for innovation and experiential learning. Ductwork was placed within walls to keep ceiling space open, black sound-absorbing material was applied to the slab to visually minimize the low ceiling, and a ceiling grid system with integrated lighting helped maintain an open, modern feel. Extensive use of glass created transparency, shared light, and a sense of openness throughout the space.

The Innovation Lab features a fabrication lab, a robotics lab, flexible classroom areas, and an open workshop designed for collaboration. The workshop is equipped with a laser cutter, 3D printer, presentation zones, and additional technology, supporting a wide range of hands-on learning experiences. The space is designed to encourage creativity, exploration, and teamwork among students.

Today, the James Guth Costigan Innovation Lab serves as a central hub for STEAM education at Saint Louis University High School. A dedicated Lab Director and STEAM Curriculum Coordinator lead the facility, guiding students as they engage with emerging technologies and develop critical problem-solving skills.

Project Size: 5,200 SF

Location: St. Louis, MO

Classrooms are equipped with innovative technology that supports interactive, hands-on learning. Flexible layouts, digital tools, and advanced equipment create dynamic environments where students can collaborate, create, and problem-solve in real time.

The robotics labs are separated from the classrooms by glass walls, creating a sense of openness while maintaining dedicated spaces for specialized learning. This transparent design encourages collaboration and visibility, allowing students to engage with innovative projects in an inspiring, connected environment.
