San Jorge Children's Hospital

This 57,000-square-foot expansion at San Jorge Children's Hospital was designed to enhance pediatric healthcare services and improve the patient and family experience while supporting the hospital's long-term growth. The project includes a new hospital entrance and welcoming lobby, a 33-bed emergency department on the first floor, an outpatient surgery department and 12-bed pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) on the second floor, a 22-bed pediatric oncology unit on the third floor, and shell space on the fourth floor to accommodate future expansion.

Beyond the clinical improvements, the project presented a unique opportunity to strengthen healthcare services for children throughout Puerto Rico and neighboring Caribbean countries. Located within a dense urban environment, the expansion required careful planning and coordination to overcome significant site and construction challenges. The new facility was constructed immediately adjacent to an active hospital that remained fully operational throughout the project, requiring extensive measures to ensure uninterrupted patient care and hospital services.

Complex logistics involving traffic management, limited site access, overhead power lines, utility coordination, and construction staging demanded a highly collaborative approach among the design and construction teams. Special coordination efforts were implemented to avoid disruptions to critical hospital operations, including power and water services, while construction noise and vibration mitigation strategies helped maintain a safe and comfortable environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Through thoughtful planning and execution, the project successfully delivered modern pediatric care facilities while preserving the continuous operation of one of the region's most important healthcare providers.
