Washington University Sumers Center Renovation & Addition
Washington University’s historic Francis Gymnasium has been transformed into a 21st century fitness, athletic and recreation center. The new Gary M. Sumers Recreation Center will energize campus and enhance recruitment amongst the University’s elite academic peers.
Built in 1902, Francis Gymnasium is a registered historical landmark and was the site of the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis. In 1984, space between the Field House and the Francis Gymnasium was infilled, and a new athletic complex was built around the Field House. Originally constructed in the 1920s, the Field House hosted presidential debates in 1992, 2000 and 2004.
All floors in the original entry “head house” were removed which creates a multi-story space through which a bridge connects old and new. This also addressed accessibility issues and complicated wayfinding that existed.
Project Size: 126,432 SF
Location: St. Louis, MO

A new three-court gymnasium with a suspended running track was added to the south of the existing field house, consolidating the majority of recreation space into one zone served by a separate controlled entry. This zoning of venues allows for uninterrupted recreational use on game days.

Locker rooms for recreation users as well as varsity athletes and visiting teams are located in the lower level of the center. This level also includes a varsity lounge, a training suite and meeting space. The comprehensive center allows students to have their recreation, fitness and wellness needs in one easily accessible location. Expansive glass windows provide views into the recreation gymnasium from campus, creating visibility and inspiring health and fitness in passersby.
Restoration of Francis Gymnasium’s historic exterior of Indiana limestone and Missouri red granite was also part of the project.
