Youngker High School Performing Arts Center
The most effective performance space is one that stays out of the way—visually, acoustically, and environmentally—allowing the audience’s attention to remain fully engaged. This was the guiding principle behind the 600-seat performing arts center at Youngker High School in Buckeye, Arizona. Designed as a 21,000 SF addition to an existing campus, the facility needed to harmonize with the distinct aesthetic of its rural surroundings.
A unique challenge was the presence of consistent jet noise from a nearby U.S. Air Force base. To address this, walls, ceilings, and roofs were engineered with deep sections and dense insulation to minimize acoustic disruption. Despite the bold architectural expression of the space, the design also had to adhere to a strict budget. This was achieved by simplifying building systems, resulting in an elegant, streamlined form. Even practical elements—like columns and stairways—were treated with intention and celebrated as integral features of the overall design.
