AI and Assessment: Redesigning for Real Learning
May 08, 2025
The rise of AI tools like ChatGPT has exposed a long-standing fragility in assessment practices. When homework can be outsourced in seconds, we must rethink what we value in student demonstration of knowledge. A shift toward performance-based assessment is already underway in districts across the country—and space must follow.
We create classrooms that support real-time, feedback-rich environments. Movable layouts, presentation stages, peer critique zones, and collaborative tables foster environments where students show what they know, not just write it down. This reduces dependency on traditional homework while elevating authenticity and engagement.
Leadership Insight: According to a 2023 RAND study, performance-based assessments improve student retention and engagement across all socioeconomic levels. Design should elevate assessment as learning—not just evaluation.
