Centre College - A. Eugene Brockman Residential Commons
Centre College engaged our firm to design a new residential community for upper-level students. At A. Eugene Brockman Residential Commons, a townhouse-style setup eases the transition from freshman housing into senior and post-graduation apartment living.
The new Brockman Residential Commons consists of five free-standing structures that gracefully wrap a landscaped courtyard to form a new campus quad. The quad opens to fraternity housing to the north. Connecting paths within the quad lead to a multi-level courtyard constructed of pre-cast pavers bordered with concrete bands. A masonry seat wall forms a half-circle around a fire pit. Curved benches and other site furnishings provide space for informal gatherings or outdoor study.

Georgian architecture expands on the existing campus context by utilizing brick and stone accents. Ornamental facades are designed to face inward to the quad and outward to major campus roadways.
The project has achieved LEED Silver certification and incorporates sustainable features throughout. The asphalt from a parking lot displaced by the project was re-used to surface a new lot. Other sustainable highlights include the use of geothermal energy and recycled materials from demolished structures.
Each townhouse is designed at residential scale with separate entries, shutter colors, and details that establish identity and wayfinding. Townhouse units have two bedrooms on the upper level, and a bedroom and shared living room with a small kitchenette on the lower level.
The centerpiece of the new residential community is the one-story Commons Building, surrounded by a colonnaded porch and topped with a cupola. A community lounge inside the Commons has high ceilings and transom windows that fill the space with daylight. Shared amenities include a full-service kitchen and large laundry facility.
